Search, Google and anti-Powerpoint Rants

The Searchblog focuses on search, media, technology, and other curiosities. It keeps an eye on Google, which has been in the news a lot recently. I plan on following it regularly. The biggest news has been the Google was testing a desktop application. Some observers see this as a direct challenge to Microsoft's monopoly on the desktop. MS has...

Prices and Washington regulations to dominate VoIP

VoIP providers face price war : "Much of the pricing question rests in Washington, D.C., where a debate is ongoing about whether VoIP providers should pay the same regulatory fees as traditional phone companies. Currently, Willis said, VoIP providers pay an average of a half-penny for every minute they serve to customers. That price could double if regulatory fees, such as contributing...

Divided intentions

I want to add more content to the pMachine weblog. I want to fiddle with a new format so that the blog actually looks something like the rest of the site. I should be adding other content to my sites (Got two rave messages about my [url=http://www.gci275.com/peru/]Peruvian Graffiti site.). I should be doing my paid work for my clients. I should set up a webserver that can actually help me design and see my blog using PHP.

Well, I've piddle away the evening by doing none of the above....

Security information disappearing off the Internet

In the name of national security by Declan McCullagh in CNET (November 3) explains how public information about security issues is disappearing off the Internet because the government thinks that it might compromise its war on terrorism. McCullagh points out that this is politically convenient becasue it prevents oversight and allows the governemnt to cover its tracks with regards to...

Design Notes

Annika Lidne of Creativity United provides some insight into the conception and implementation of a website: "I'm not a web designer nor a html, php or css guru. During the creation of this site I've found out that there are a lot of people out there like me who want a nice and easily maintained site but are a bit uncertain as to where to start. Therefore I thought I save a few of you the trouble I've...

My PHP burbed and pMachine support fixed it fast

After I made an entry in the weblog with pMachine, I went into the Control Panel to erase the boilerplate place holder that is put there as a placeholder. I got an error message and I could not see any entry. I checked in with the pMachine support forum and left a message reporting the problem. Within 15 minutes, I was notified by e-mail that a response had been posted.

It turns out that my server has PHP 4.06, and there was some code in the configuration that was specific to the newer...

It's a start

It took me most of the day to get this new weblog based on pMachine up and running. The issue was not the documentation and setup routine of the weblog application. pMachine has done a good job of laying out the steps and automating the process. The problem was that I had never worked with mySQL or PHP. The...

Switching partners in blogging

I have decided to broaden my experience with blogging software. In fairly short order, I will switch this blog over to pMachine. I decided to make the change because Rafat Ali said, "I still think pMachine is...

Making decisions on regular expressions

I spent the weekend working on implementing regular expressions with the applications that I mentioned in my previous entry. Actually, I never got around to to using XReplace32, but put BKReplaceEM and PowerGrep through some pretty serious use in prepping probably 2,000 pages for <a...
